Finally into the dark

With the Kobold Chief gone missing, his hut (which was the top spire of an ancient stone elfin tower) is now the last clue to his whereabouts. Having no other course of action, the Ontreps search the inside, finding a hidden spiral staircase in the center of the floor. They descend…

Floor B1

To their surprise, they find the floor below to be a brightly lit, and orderly wizards’ lab, complete with an alchemists table, magical items crafting and potion brewing equipment, shelves and tables full of spell components, scribing materials, and shelves full of books. After borrowing a few of these items, the Ontreps decide to move on.

Floor B2

Moving down the stairs, they come upon the landing to a much darker and ruined kitchen and find that the stairs further down are collapsed and impassable. Its once great wooden cupboards collapsed and rotted with age, its stone walls bematted with moss and slime from the damp. The floor is ankle deep with water from a wall wash basin fountain that wasn’t switched off. (to be finished later…)

Quick Adventure Recap
Recap important events from start to present

Our heroes (the “Ontreps”) trained for years at the Last Academy in the frontier town of Gamble, in the forest foothills of the menacing Grand Po mountains. They get in some trouble at the local inn shortly after completing the last days of their training, and are sent on a mission of atonement (by the Judge and Master of the Academy, who also placed them under a Quest spell) to save a local halfling village from a local beast menace. On the way to the town they encounter some wolves, goblin raiders, and a double-headed, toll taking bridge giant. Before arriving at the halfling village, their emissary, the halfling sorceress Myra, from the village is actually revealed to be a small, strange, lizard-like humanoid female in disguise, a race unheard of in this world. Myra is apologetic of the deception, and explains her people aren’t halfling, but are actually called “kobolds” and that her clan was brought here from another world by their Chief to escape persecution and make a new life for themselves. She also explains that their powerful Chief is missing, and without his protection her people are being decimated by mysterious, ghost-like beasts. Getting desperate, she left the village in the care of her brother, Bill, and sought help from the outside. Our heroes decide to continue the journey and to help Myra and her people in good will, despite the deception and the quest spell. The Ontreps arrive within a day at the now ruined and besieged lizard people’s village deep in the mountain forest wilderness and are met with pit traps and suspicion from the few remaining kobolds, and Bill. Shortly after the beasts attack the village again, and the Ontreps help defend, gaining the complete trust of the little lizard folk. The Ontreps search the Chief’s hut at the center of the village (which appears to be the top spire of an ancient elven tower rising from the ground) and find a hidden staircase with the press of a floor switch. Having no way of knowing if this will help their search for the Chief, yet having no better course of action, they descend the dark, spiral stairway…

Day Four

as the fighting screeching gets louder and closer the kolbolds become increasingly alert, and quickly ignore Silimas entrance in their village. screaming and combat begin rapidly, Tsukiume rushes to the southern clutch of eggs, Varren to the East, silima disappears in the combat, Tyrea is the first to see one of the mystery-creatures. it is revealed to be an small bipedal blue reptile with a gaping maw and no claws, as it attacks Tyrea shoots an arrow rapidly and kills the first of the strange creatures. nobody knows what these creatures are, however the kolbolds seem prepared for them.
as various traps spring and a pair of the mysterious creatures die attempting to raid the kolbold-eggs the adventurers are minor support in the defense. after a few moments however, the screeching falls away and the monsters disappear. the kolbolds return to their watch and generally start to relax with the experience that the monsters do not return after leaving so quickly.
After the battle one of the sentry’s start to yell “BILL! BILL! There is a strange human here!” at the alarm Bill, Tsukiume, Silima and Varren head over to the sentry to discover that another of the academy have been mysteriously transported to the village, this time Ayazhei Ta’Mesa an archivist which is well-known by the adventurers. Having been transported earlier and hearing the sounds of battle, made his way cautiously to the town alone (falling into a few traps along the way) and is wanting to help after hearing the events that have unfolded.

Day Three

as we continue on, we arrive within view of the village, light-less and dark it is a cautioning view. we enter slowly with great caution, prepaired for a fight…

Entering the Village

Immediatly visable is the wrecked buildings, claw marks and blood on the walls.
As we travel slowly into the village we have to stop and shock Myra out of her terror so that she could answer where the village would gather should such a tragedy occur. with the center of the town as our current destination we move ever-slowly. Talmarth slips away from the group and follows from the other sides of the buildings.
AHH~ Tsukiume and Varren slip instantly into a pit-fall with a loud crash, after climbing out, suprised by the fact there is a trap at all the adventurers ask Myra if this is a common defence? which she points out pit falls are not a common defense by any village unless in the most dangerous of events. aware and cautious, we fall pray to no more traps, the traps themselves give hope to myra that her people remain.
Still moving slowly towards the center of town, a bolt shoots at the group through a nearby barrier!
Voices speak in draconian from within a barrier. Myra steps forward yelling “stop, stop it’s me!” the voices cautiously acknowledge her, and ask who else goes there, after explaining who the adventurers are we are allowed into the center of the town which was mostly tunneled out of the very thick underbrush, in the center of the town the main building identified as “the chiefs hut” was strangely the top of an ancient elven tower.
we are introduced to Myra’s brother Bill and have an conversation which continues for hours due to the common need to translate. the conversation reveals many facts known obviously to the players, <insert>, are allowed access to the chiefs hut if we do so respectfully.
Tsukiume asks for a small hut for the group so as she may place her pack, and donates her spells of ‘create/purify food/water’ for dinner earning some of the villages gratitude.
within each of the huts there is a small clutch of eggs.
with dinner over and the day ending we bed down for the night. accepting the kolbolds provided hut and relying on their sentries.

In the dead of night

at the end of the night, we hear a loud scream and a crash through the tree-canopy, the kolbolds burst up to gaurd their eggs. the team, Tsukiume clad in her blood-stained pajamas grabs only her shield and heavy-mace, awakens and rushes over to discover the crash was caused by a Female Djinni who had for some reason crashed through the forest canopy into the kolbold village.
Tsukiume and Varren recognize silima, while Varren rushes in-between Silima and the kolbolds, Tsukiume yells (in dragonic) “STOP!” the kolbolds stop immediately because of the loud command and Bill asks “why, what is this!” Tsukiume states “this is Silima a friend and magic-accident prone wizard who is known for blowing up her own room.” the shocked kolbolds calm down though still near-speechless at the awkward and strange appearance, but then… a loud screeching fills the canopy… Bill looks at the strange group and says “this is how it begins”.

Revealing the Truth

we were attempting to figure out what Myra was hiding from our group during her ‘pit stops’. upon tracking her during her ‘pit stop’ Varren discovered the truth, Myra was not a halfling but a lizard-like humanoid creature (kolbold) [not native to the world]!
Myra tells us that Her village is not the halfling village however a village of her own kind and that she does not know what the mysterious attackers are simply that they dissapear and re-appear randomly. the reason We have been able to survive so long is because of our grandfathers barriers/wards, however He dissapeared a few months ago because of this our village has begun falling apart. She has tried keeping up her villages barriers however, has not succeeded well. I might have the power to end your ‘quest’ spell if you do not wish to help us.
Tsukiume asks ‘how she was disguising herself to appear as an halfling’ and myra reveals that her kind have some magical nature and she used “alter self” with an disguise to get the help of the academy. at which Tsukiume is glad to help any species with a magical touch. Varren notes that the only thing waiting for them at the academy is death. Talmarth is quite dissapointed that she was not the extra-hot halfling that she appeared to be. Tyrea remainded silent through the exchange however seemed accepting with the decision.
an while later
later that evening Tsukiume takes a chance to speak with myra privately about the ‘quest’ spell which binds them and the inconvenient risks which the spell poses to them, after a small discussion myra agrees and releases the possible hero-villian group from their quest spell.

the night

We continue a ways and then set up camp using, spells of healing to fully restore us all before sleeping (Tsukiume takes off her armor). we all agree to take turns watching for intruders and awaken on the first watch to the nearby howling of wolves in the deep night. the fire has fallen to embers. Tsukiume rushes out of her tent in her pajamas with mace and shield in hand and begins to feed the fire to discourage the wolves from approaching(too late).
Suddenly, we hear the wolves slowly stalking around the camp, their eyes glowing in the dark forest.
They strike first, Varren takes a bite the to back of the leg.
a wolf leaps straight at Myra, only to be struck by an ‘magic missile’.
Tsukiume abandons the campfire and uses her magic scroll to cast ‘dancing lights’ creating four balls of light in the area illuminating the campsite.
Varren strikes back at the wolf slicing a piece out of its snout.
a wolf barrels through Tsukiumes tent (much to her fury), She attempts to strike it and misses horribly, a bite at Her side causes blood to seep onto her expensive pajamas.
Myra blasts out another ‘magic missle’ into the neck of a nearby wolf.
Varren strikes at a turning wolf injuring it.
Talmarth stabs the heart of the wolf wrapped in tsukiumes tent killing it instantly.
Tsukiume leaps over the campfire getting a small bite from a wolf and brains it hardly with her heavy mace. at which point it turns and runs.
We re-create the fire and continue the watch over the night.

as morning rises

01/08/1028
Varren inspects the area and notes that our ‘campsite’ is in the wolves territory.
not wanting to bother the wolves any more than needed, We attempt swiftly tredge out of the area.

traveling

while on our trek onword we are ambushed by Goblins (filthy little yellow humanoids)
Talmarth leaps into action quickly striking at the nearest goblin
Tyrea pulls out her bow quickly and fires at a goblin comming up from behind.
a goblin rushs in from the side swinging his club wildly. the goblin shot by Tyrea turns and runs. the goblin swinging his club misses talmarth
Tsukiume drops her pack and swings at a nearby goblin missing.
a small thunk above our heads, reveals a pair of goblins farther ahead attempting to sling stones at us, and missing horribly.
Myra points her finger at one of the ahead goblins and a Thin ray of white cold power ‘ray of frost’
one of the goblins stepped forward and attempted to attack talmarth with a club only to miss horribly.
Varren quickly dashes up the trunk of a tree and leaps at a goblin just inside of the brush.
Tyrea shoots again and hits true an arrow pierces out of a goblins small side.
The goblin right in front of Talmarth grabs his club with both hands and brains him right on the side of the head.
Tsukiume swings her heavy mace and hits nothing
a goblin swings at Tyrea only to miss badly
Varren places his swords on top of each-other and scissors off a goblins head!
Talmarth slashes at the goblin in front of him again cutting lines on the goblins skin.
Tyrea drops her longbow and draws her longsword, swinging at a nearby goblin only to shallowly miss.
the goblins ahead of the group continue slinging stones a hit knocks myra on the head
Tsukiume swings again at the goblin in front of talmarth braining the goblin.
Myra shoots another ‘ray of frost’ at the goblins ahead giving it a deep chill.
Varren moves up to one of the ahead goblins and slices off an arm followed by its head!
the goblin attacking tyrea turns around and flees from the group of adventurers.
Talmarth slips into the forest and rushes to the other goblin which was slinging stones and Garrotes it! instantly, it drops to the ground.
with all the goblins dead the group prepairs to continue on the trail but stop for a moment watching as Talmarth hangs a goblin corpse on a tree. as a warning to other goblins.

Log kept by Tsukiume

Introduction

01/08/1028, (A millenium after the Great Rending

After an acceptably enjoyable bar-brawl with no death, I was prepared for a night in prison, if disgusted by the rags we were provided as bedding, however while talking with the gaurd is greatly surprised to learn that the initiates, who were also in the brawl, had been killed immediately after we had been arrested. How did the initiates die while the guards were there? Who killed them? Why were we made to look as the killers? If the academy/town has been infiltrated why would they frame us? What is their plan?… too many questions and not enough answers…

In the morning We were brought before the Judge, A wise old man, He was confident and fair for His position. He required of us to accept a quest to rescue a nearby town from danger, its mysterious attacker is unknown, for pardon of the charge of murder in the bar and prove ourselves well-intentioned, my response was that “Upon success I demand to be allowed to find the one who framed us and claim justice for our fallen initiates and that i be allowed to continue my schooling afterwords.” at such point my less-than-worthy classmates began muttering amongst themselves (In a room of the court none-the-less!), I silently retorted for them to be silent, only to hear the judge hammering for order after which he accepted my just demand and sent us on our way. Be warned whoever-framed Me, I shall find you…

After accepting a quest spell from the Master’s familiar cat we were introduced to the stunningly beautiful Halfling female Myra who was to be our guide to the the Halfling village almost a day’s travel south. we had our bags prepared swiftly and began on our quest thus so. it is a shame that this small town has such difficulties with horse-raising I dislike having to carry this heavy bag myself through this forest though it is unquestionably worth it.

searching for the scout

Most strange Our guide began traveling east, away from both the Academy and the Halfling village, Talmarth asks why and she informs us that we need to retrieve her scout ally which went this way before we can travel to the halfling village.

Meeting the Ettin

After a distance we heard a sound, which turned out to be strange language, silently we approached cautiously, to learn what it was in the forest so near our town, there it was the source of the noise a giant with TWO HEADS! they were speaking to each other(what a strange creature to have a conversation with itself!).
I attempted to silently place my pack down, however, one of my cooking pots made a loud “ding” on a rock as I set it down alerting the Ettin to my presence it instantly called out “Who goes there! come out!”
I stepped out of the bush quickly so that I could direct the creatures attention “Who calls, for I am here!” I replied loudly. As I stepped out from the bush I was able to clearly see that this giant was standing on a crudely made bridge across a channel of water no more than 40 feet across and carrying a pair of broken-tree branches as clubs! though I am confident that the water has nothing dangerous in it, I would greatly like to avoid getting my precious clothes in the murky water.
The Ettin announced “This is my bridge, those who want to cross have to pay gold!”
Because this creature is so near the town We should not leave it as-is if He is willing to travel and make trouble. While lifting My heavy mace to point at Him, I proclaim “You will leave this area or I will pay you with steel!” with previous experience I know that to my left Talmarth is hiding in the brush, the cowardly rogue, and to my right Tyrea is likely prepairing for one of her favored ranged assaults. though I stand in front of this creature with courage, those clubs will still hurt greatly, it will be wise not to be hit.
The Two-headed giant retorts loudly “This is my bridge, those who want to cross have to pay all their gold!” seeing only that Tsukiume was close to His bridge.
Varren steps out and chips in “which of your two heads do we have to pay?” The Giants Two heads look at each other utterly confounded by the question. Tsukiume has to hold back a laugh greatly amused by the two heads confusion.
The Two-headed giant Repeats himself “This is my bridge, those who want to cross have to pay gold!”
Varren retorts “which head do we have to pay?” causing the ettin another bout confusion

the ettin is a Giant with two heads. not known for their intelligence

Fighting the Ettin

A sudden shaking of branches occur as Talmarth begins climbing a tree, the ettin yells “Come out! i know your there!”
Out of the brush flies Tyreas arrow shooting true and lands deep in the giants chest (quite painful to see for the prideful Tsukiume)
Tsukiume takes a step back under the tall brush so that when the ettin steps forward His vision will be impaired by the tall bush and she will be free to strike without impairment. and shouts at the gaint “Come at The!”
The Ettin Charges forward and just as planned both of his clubs miss (if bearly) with great resounding “THUD THUD”.
Varrendashes back into the brush with the desire to protect Myra from any potential danger. seeing his cowardice Tsukiume demands at him “retrieve My bag, as You are not fighting.” which He does.
Talmarth dashing forward in an attempt to tumble under the ettin legs only succeeds in finding his face introduced the the ‘handle’ of the giants club! though stabbing the ettin in the leg.
Tyrea rolls behind Tsukiume and shoots an arrow over her shoulder into the giants chest again. causing a loud howl of pain from the ettin.
Tsukiume Charges forward and Strikes out with her heavy mace only to have it bounce off the giants large body.
The ettins first club lands a heavy blow to Tsukiumes left side. and the second landing just in front of her which allows her to get a satisfying ‘wack’ in on the creatures arm.
Myra comments to varren that we appear to be out-matched and shouldn’t fight.
Varren having made sure Myra is safe descides to take a closer look at the waters edge.
Talmarth gets up and retreats swiftly into the brush so that the world will stop spinning around him.
Tyrea ducks back into the brush to Tsukiumes right and continues shooting arrows at the giant to no avail.
Tsukiume Stepping farther back into the brush to attempt avoiding another strike of the giants dangerous clubs and healing herself with a gift of healing (cure light wounds) from her diety Mystra.
Varren having learned that the water is safe, the old farmer, rushes across the water (gaining no attention from the gaint) revealing the the rest of the group that the water is shallow (for humans anyways) only two-feet deep at best. (giant obviously ain’t that bright.)
Talmarth seeing Tsukiume back into the brush and knowing her healing spells potential descides to meet up with her just inside the brush.
Tyrea Continues shooting arrows with mixed results.
Tsukiume seeing Talmarths bloody face channels again a healing gift (cure moderate wounds) to restore talmarths injury.
The ettin steps forward to the edge of his bridge and Strikes again at Tsukiume only to have his first club fly out of his hands and clear into the forest. the second club bludgeoning Tsukiume for a second time on the left side.
Varren now across the river varren steps on to the bridge and yelling “Hey Gaint! I’m on Your bridge!”
Talmarth Throw’s his dagger at the giant with no effect.
Tyrea Continues shooting arrows with mixed results.
Tsukiume ducks back farther into the brush too injured to take another hit from the tree-branch clubs
The ettin Turns around and charges at Varren (one head keeps looking backwards) and strikes with his remaining club slapping varren hardly.
Varren steps back into the brush on the other side of the river to escape the Giants large club
Talmarth leaps into the water (which due to his small size is up to his chest), and begins to wade across, throwing daggers all the while.
Tyrea Continues shooting arrows with mixed results.
Tsukiume notices that the ettin has not left his bridge the entire fight and seems only concerned with Gaurding it… turns rushes into the water, (cursing this two headed oaf for causing her clothes to get dirty) calling for Varren to pass Her one of the Silk ropes which was hanging from the side of her pack.
The ettin, with nobody now trying to get on his bridge, reaches up grabs a tree branch rips it off, breaks it in half, and Throws it at Tyrea who dexterously ducks the destructive drubbery.
Varren moves over to the water-line and throws the silken rope over to Tsukiume realizing instantly her plan.
Talmarth throw’s a ‘tanglefoot bag’ at the ettins leg only to have it slop over one leg and have obvious effect.
Tyrea knowing now that the water is not very deep, rushes across the water and tries to shoot, only to have her bow slip out of his hands and fall into the murky water! (wouldn’t a bow float?) and begins searching for his it. (inactive rest of fight)
Tsukiume attempts throwing the silk rope over the bridge to Talmarth, however doesn’t have the strength needed to get it over the bridge only to stare furiously at the rope as it slides back into the river at her feet.
The ettin rips off another tree branch and throws it to no avail
Varren realizes Tsukiume doesn’t have the strength and rushes over. gives Tsukiume the end of the rope and Throw’s the rope over the bridge.
Talmarth grabs the end of the rope which was thrown to him and begins to run to the shore realizing also that the plan is to wrap the rope around the giants legs and trip Him.
Tsukiume Rushes on the the land right after Talmarth elated to see that the rope is successfully around the giants legs.
The giant Rips off another branch and this time keeps it in his hand as a replacement club
Varren walks onto the other side of the bank getting ready to leap onto the gaints heads when he trips over.
Talmarth and Tsukiume Pull the rope taut, bracing themselves for the giant to trip.
The giant now seeing that nobody is trying to get on his bridge (oblivious to the rope) walks to the center of his bridge each head watching the sides of his bridge.
The majority of the party is caught between Despair and Laughter as Talmarth is slowly Dragged by the oblivious two-headed giant.
Tsukiume tells Talmarth to release His rope and begins to reel it in to Herself, declaring that the fight is over. Tyrea reclaims her bow having realized that this ettin has no intention of traveling away from His “bridge” and deciding We are a sufficient distance from town that He will not injure anybody. there is no reason to continue fighting a creature of such great challenge. after crossing the murky water again (CURSE THIS GIANT!). and rejoining Myra

search continues

As we continue to search for the missing scout Myras “pit stops” become unusually common.
Tsukiume says to Tyrea and Varren Follow Myra and check what She’s “really” doing.
